The Price

Our Civil War was brutal as America searched to find its way.
I think of words from Lincoln about the price we’d have to pay.
Lincoln talked about slavery and the judgments of the Lord.
Think back about his talk of the lash and the sword!
He believed that on war; it may have been fate.
That blood was required – the sacrifice would be great.
His desire to maintain the Union was a decision made long ago.
It brought with it much pain – Mr. Lincoln would suffer so.
During his Gettysburg address the sun shined so bright.
There was no question at all which course was right.
His response that day was a speech like no other.
He talked about war’s sadness pitting brother against brother.
His decision was clear – the Union will stand.
To those who would destroy – remember – we are one land.
His wisdom came from the ages – it was stated so clear.
No better man for the time no better words from any peer.
