Far From Home and Nowhere to Turn

Far From Home and Nowhere to Turn

by Todd Jobson, II

(Clinton Public School)

In a land we all know

Americans, even brothers fought side by side
Some were foe.
At the battlefields like Antiedam, the Confederate soldiers gallantly marched
As the Union soldiers were extremely parched.
All prisoner of a common enslavement
They thought of what their predecessors would have wanted,
What they would have changed.
Men brought together by music, but driven apart by beliefs
All very confused and hoping hate will deplete.

Once standing in harmony, now in disarray
They look back into the past times, the fray.
No longer side by side, some died and were buried in graves
Though others died nameless, without rights; they were slaves.

Black or White, they will all suffer
On this night of nothing but thoughts
They think of their families,
They who truly suffer.

Families, once friends
A country divided
Neither rich nor poor, were at all excited.
Union blue or Confederate pride
Any man had the right to pick their side.
Some owned nothing, not even their freedom;
The soldiers went through hardships at the Battle of Antiedam

Invigorated with hate, yet driven by love
The soldiers all think why push, why shove?
Can we ever resolve our differences, we’re not too different
Payed for in innocent blood for it’ll be over soon.
Free men at last, yet freedom is not free;
We hope for the storm to settle over to have a better country.
