Homemade Recipes
I believe that homemade recipes are an important part of the food culture associated with a place, and Gettysburg is no exception.
When you eat in harmony with the regional landscape you feel a connection to it.
The local choices in food and taste reflect the local culture and personality.
Fresh foods from homegrown ingredients cannot help but reflect the local climate and soil.
And the taste of fresh food is no comparison to foods that travel long distances!
As Barbara Kingsolver said in her book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life:
“[Food culture] arises out of a place, a soil, a climate, a history, a temperament, a collective sense of belonging.”
So I have written a cookbook to share my family’s recipes and that will encourage you to eat the fresh, seasonal foods of Gettysburg and the mid-Atlantic area. They have been passed down though the generations and were probably used during the Civil War era.
Some of the dishes include:
- Dandelion greens
- Sassafras tea
- Zucchini crab cakes
- Scrapple
- Roast turkey with giblet gravy
- Strawberry rhubarb pie
- Pumpkin pie
- And many more!
