Not Just For Cleaning

Women were supposed to cook and clean,
but they wanted to take a stand.
They got together from everywhere,
And lent a helping hand.
They cooked, collected,
Created warm wear.
Generosity was ever brewing
For all of their brave men.
Through the women’s eye,
They weren’t doing enough.
They got ready for battle; they were invigorated,
As they wanted to fight.
What about women’s rights?
They had close to none!
When it came to fighting,
The door to opportunity was shut without consideration.
The women had a plan, though.
Nearly 400 disguised themselves as men.
Bravery was present,
As they risked eternal imprisonment.
The Second Battle of Bull Run,
And the Battle of Petersburg.
These and many more,
Were the fights women took place in.
Some women nursed the sick;
Some kept healthy soldiers strong.
Together, they formed the US Sanitary Commission,
As everyone joined.
Nearly 20,000 women got involved,
As they helped their armies.
I truly revere their actions,
As I believe they were venerable historical figures.
They all made a difference in the 4 bloody years.
Many did not get discovered.
The bravery that they displayed and the enthusiasm that they showed
Proved that women were not just for cleaning.
