Why not enjoy some Gettysburg theater during your visit?
My earliest memory of a live theatrical experience is sitting on a blanket outside of Gettysburg College and watching a live outdoor performance of The City Mouse and the Country Mouse. (See a photo of my toy on the right.) I was hooked and ended up studying theatre arts at the college I attended! Actually, I don't believe anyone in the Gettysburg theater area does outdoor children's shows anymore, do they? Someone please prove me wrong.
Anyway, there are several great places for adults to see live Gettysburg theater inside beautiful buildings. The Majestic Theater is the main place in town, located just off the square on Carlisle Street. They have special guests come in for one night performances, big names like Vicki Lawrence, the Smothers Brothers, or The Temptations.
However, my favorite place is the Totem Pole Playhouse.
Travel 15 miles west of Gettysburg, PA on the historic Lincoln Highway, route 30, to reach the Totem Pole Playhouse next to Caledonia State Park. It has a very interesting history with connections to actress Jean Stapleton of All in the Family fame. It's a summer stock theatre, but it's an equity house so the people who put on the shows are professionals. The new Artistic Director is Ray Ficca! I am a long time Ficca fan since his days at Theatre on the Hill. During the 2009 season, I went to see him star in Cotton Patch Gospel and I Hate Hamlet. Both were great!
